What is FODMAP?

FODMAP’s is the name given to a range of carbohydrates that have been shown to irritate and affect those that suffer from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). FODMAPS stand for : Fermentable, Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols.

These carbohydrates can be found in a range of foods, the most common are onion and garlic.  Following on from these two major irritants, there are other foods that are considered ‘high’, 'moderate’ and ‘low’ FODMAP.  These should be considered when you are looking to take on the FODMAP way of eating, we suggest always working alongside a qualified dietitian or doctor when embracing a FODMAP diet.

The term FODMAP and the research behind these foods was created by researchers from the Monash University of Australia. We suggest you include their website in your own personal research, and they also have a handy app which helps to identify the High, Moderate and Low FODMAP foods.
